We worked with two of the Scottish Enterprise-funded Intermediary Technology Institutes, ITI Techmedia and ITI Life Sciences, over a number of years. We provided project management and technical expertise across pre-commercialisation research and development programmes involving e-learning, gamification, data analysis and information extraction.
The institutes supported research intended to lead to technologies that businesses could commercialise. Scottish Enterprise’s 2006/07 annual review records programmes across both digital technology and life sciences, alongside agreements to license the resulting work to companies.
Two examples in that review help explain the wider setting: ITI Techmedia’s games-based learning work sought to make educational content easier to develop, while an ITI Life Sciences agreement concerned a database product for accessing scientific information. These are examples of the institutes’ activity at the time; our involvement covered the areas described above.
Our contribution combined project management with technical expertise during the research and development stage. The work extended our experience of interactive software into education and information-focused applications, where the purpose of a programme was to explore and develop technology ahead of commercial use.
