Funding Applications and Funded R&D

We write funding applications for technology research and development, and we win them. We can also deliver the work that follows. Insurgent Studios is based in Edinburgh and has worked with Scottish, UK and European funding programmes.

What we take on

  • Defining the programme. Turning an idea into a piece of work a funder can assess: what will be built, by whom, by when, and what it will show.
  • Forming a consortium. Bringing industry and academic partners together around a proposal, and leading it.
  • Preparing the application. Writing and submitting it.
  • Building a proof of concept. Having something working in practice, rather than on paper, gives a proposal a concrete starting point.
  • Delivering the funded work. Managing and developing the research and development programme itself.

Applications we have won

Over the years these have included:

  • Scottish Enterprise. Multiple successful grant applications for VEEMEE, the virtual world studio we helped found in Edinburgh.
  • Scottish Enterprise High Growth Ventures. A successful application for Square Slice Studios, which took the company to New York in September 2016 on a Scottish Enterprise market programme.
  • EIT Digital. A successful consortium application for GiftGuard, which we led, working with Ingenico, Bitwise and the University of Edinburgh on a proposed budget of over €600,000.
  • Innovate UK. Funding of approximately £75,000 for The Reality Lab, a mixed reality teaching platform we then developed.
  • Creative Informatics. The Creative Horizon programme supported our work with Edinburgh College of Art on opening up its animation archive.

Research and development we have delivered

For GiftGuard we designed and built a working demonstrator in-house before the application was written: a countertop unit that could scan a gift card, check its balance, activate it and redeem value against it. The Reality Lab was developed as a proof of concept running on both Magic Leap One and Oculus Quest, and provided the basis for the further work with Edinburgh College of Art.

Earlier, for the two Scottish Enterprise-funded Intermediary Technology Institutes, we provided project management and technical expertise across pre-commercialisation research and development programmes over a number of years.

What to expect

Winning the funding is not the same as shipping a product. GiftGuard was scheduled into EIT Digital’s portfolio and then lost to delays in its funding arrangements. We would rather say so than present every funded proposal as a success.

If you have a programme in mind, or a call you want to apply to, tell us about it. Our other services are described separately.
