Developed for the City of Edinburgh Council and the Museum of Edinburgh, our Field Marshal Earl Haig installation used touch technology to turn the glass of an existing display cabinet into a way of exploring the objects inside.
Visitors could manipulate detailed digital models of collection items and discover episodes from Haig’s life and career. Our original project microsite shows models of a compass, camera, field glasses and tunic, including comparisons between the finished objects and their underlying 3D geometry. The installation also provided access to some collection material that was not physically on display.
The digital layer let visitors explore objects while the originals remained in the cabinet. It formed part of a pair of museum experiences offering touch and gesture interaction and a choice of languages. The companion installation, Window on the Past, explored the history of the museum’s courtyard.
Contemporary coverage of the June 2015 launch named Insurgent Studios as the museum’s partner and described the use of achievements to reward exploration. Together, the installations connected digital models and interactive storytelling with the museum’s existing collection and surroundings.
